Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, commonly known as C.V. Raman, was an Indian physicist who made significant contributions to the field of physics, particularly in the area of light scattering. He was born on November 7, 1888, in the city of Tiruchirappalli, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India.

Education:-

Raman earned a bachelor's degree in science from Presidency College, Chennai, and later received a master's degree from the University of Madras. He then went on to pursue a doctorate at the University of London, where he conducted research in the field of acoustics.


Return India:-

In 1921, Raman returned to India and joined the faculty at the University of Calcutta, where he began his groundbreaking research on the scattering of light. In 1928, he made the discovery that would ultimately win him the Nobel Prize in Physics: the Raman Effect. This effect occurs when a beam of light passes through a transparent material, and a small fraction of the light is scattered in all directions. Raman discovered that some of the scattered light has a different wavelength than the original light, and that this change in wavelength is caused by the interaction between the light and the atoms and molecules in the material. This discovery had significant implications for the field of spectroscopy and helped lay the foundation for the study of molecular physics.

Award:-

Raman received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to science, including the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, becoming the first Asian to win a Nobel Prize in any field of science. He also served as the director of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore from 1933 to 1937 and as the president of the Indian Academy of Sciences from 1935 to 1941. In addition to his scientific achievements, Raman was also a strong advocate for scientific education and research in India.
Sadly, Raman passed away on November 21, 1970, but his legacy lives on through the numerous scientific institutions and awards that bear his name, as well as the ongoing research in the fields of physics and molecular science that he helped pioneer. Today, he is remembered as one of India's most celebrated scientists and a true pioneer in the field of physics.
